The One Thing That Will Add Magic to Your Wedding Day

You have been dreaming about this special day since you were a child. You have been discussing details with your friends for months now, and now that the big day is finally a reality, you want the very best with as little stress as possible.

Now take a moment and think about this: what is the single most important ingredient, the one thing that will create and set the mood for the whole function, from before the ceremony until after the reception? Is it your dress? Surely it will be beautiful, but it will impress and then be a dress again. Is it the food? Naturally you would expect great food, but consuming it takes up only about 25% of the time spent at most weddings. Could it be the flowers, the preacher, the venue…?

I believe the single most important factor that will determine the mood and therefore the success of your wedding, is the music.

It starts as early as 30 minutes before the ceremony and continues in some way or form until the end of the reception. Therefore I think it is the most important consideration you should make when organising your special day, apart from making sure you are getting married to the right person, of course!

Given the importance of the right music for your wedding, it always amazes me to see that people will spend top dollar for their dress, the flowers, they will book the most beautiful venue and get fantastic catering, and then they look at what is over in the budget (surprise-surprise!) and try to find musicians or just a DJ. They will even resort to home hi-fi’s and family member for the music. Now, I’m not saying that your aunt Maggie can’t sing properly, but in most cases this is looking for trouble.

This article is written for people who care about things like mood or atmosphere. If you just want to get out of church as quickly as possible to get trashed at your own wedding, this article will mean very little to you. What I find is that most people will book a DJ first, before almost anything else. There are lots of them, so relax. If you look around you might find fabulous options. I believe that, if your budget allows, you should try to get live music at the ceremony. This is the first step up from doing what everybody else is doing. The next step up would be to have live music at the ceremony and the first part of your reception while people are having their main meal and in between the speeches. A DJ can then take over for the dance. A live dance band is the ultimate. It is also a scarce commodity. If you look around you might find people who can help you with all of the above, so you only need to book one band / company instead of three or four different people.

This article doesn’t cover how to look for musicians or what to look for. That is a separate topic. This is only a reminder about the importance of music at any event and especially at something as special as your wedding. Please give this aspect some consideration because if you get it right, it will add magic to your special day. It will leave you with an amazing day to start the rest of your life with and something your guests will talk about for years.
