Mother of the Bride: The Dream, the Reality, the Search for a Perfect Dress

Mother of the Bride: The Dream, the Reality, the Search for a Perfect Dress . When Ilene Beckerman told us the story of her clothes in Love, Loss, and What I Wore, she captivated women of all ages. Her story moved people to tears and made us laugh out loud, too. Ilene–”Gingy,” as she’s known–showed us ourselves. Now Gingy looks at one of life’s happiest (and most stressful) events: the planning of a daughter’s wedding. Once again this Everywoman takes us lovingly, and hilariously, through another passage in a woman’s life. Whether it’s searching for a mother-of-the-bride dress that doesn’t look like something Mrs. Khrushchev would have worn, or choosing hors d’oeuvres that won’t give the guests indigestion, Gingy offers a fresh look at a subject that needs a fresh look. She describes a year of agony and ecstasy–and along the way shares with us a mother’s love and expectations for her daughter. See details

Here are some pointers from the professionals that will help in the search for that perfect gown.

1. Look through some bridal magazines to get a general idea of what you want. The more you can tell the consultant about your likes and dislikes, the better chance you have of finding your dream gown.

2. Start early! Most gowns take between 4-6 months to order in the correct size and colour. The sooner you start shopping the better.

3. Be honest about your budget at the beginning. Don’t run the risk of falling in love with something you could not possibly afford.

4. Take only 1 or 2 people with you. It is easier to shop without a crowd.

5. Avoid shopping on a Saturday if at all possible. Phone the bridal salon and ask when the least busiest time of the week is. You will receive more personal service and will not have to wait on a dressing room or consultant. (more…)
